is a "major hub city," would cast strong accolades for our town, and our gay community's awareness and commitment to its own achievements. Gay Pride also begins with hometown pride.

3. "Personals" ads policy is still the most overt and blatant area for the promulgation of divisive philosophy in our otherwise beautiful community. All our preaching and urging for our people to unite and rally behind the lambda banner for totally equal justice and peace, to become involved with political, social services, health issues, religiously-oriented causes, personal awareness, resource-channeling/useage, and generally educational topics (related to gay and lesbian people), is hogwash, unless it is backed up by an affirmative policy to exclude all forms of segregationist/separatist language in all copy, but especially personal ads. Such terms as cited, and a multitude of others, establish an elitist class among an already fragmented and unhealed folk. United we stand? divided we fall! Elitism and its attendant stereotyping will destroy gaydom long before "breeders," homophobia, and heterosexism.

4. NORML's letter clangs more like something to be condensed and run as a paid ad, in my opinion. Your comment might have recommended that future copy of this nature will be dealt with as such. Thank them for their information and opinion, but also remind them how the choice

of "pot" as a recreation is so closely tied to the later use of those drugs we are warring against, despite our record of "slim, to none" in the win column. No one will deny cannabis can be used medicinally, and, as any medicine should be made available by a doctor's prescription in a therapeutic regimen. We would never suggest any patient be denied the benefits of any potentially effective treatment. Neither, would we withhold the good of new hopes in AIDS treatments, nor that extended those suffering any serious ailment. Logic precludes our accomplishing these goals by granting unbridled use of any medication; so it is with "cannabis." Your regular medical writer, surely, would agree and write an "Ed." note to this letter from NORML.

All in all, were I a pedagogue, I'd rate you a very 'high mark' for even printing these letters, but, 'barely passing' for fairness of commentary. An even lower ranking goes for failure to include a "directedpoll" of reader opinion on each of these hot issues (as well as every topic presented via the letters column) about which their vote will be reflected in the policies of the gay people's Chronicle!

I've cast my votes, herein, very cautiously on each of these issues. What do the rest of you, the Chronicle's faithful readers, think?

God's wrath, again

To the Editor:

GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

The following "Letter to the Editor" published in the February 2 issue of Opera News is one of the more vicious examples of homophobia I've encountered recently.

Opera News has a great many gay readers, and the opera world has suffered greatly from AIDS. Indeed, a former editor of Opera News died form the syndrome. In light of these facts, the publication of the letter from R.D. Bulos is particularly inexcusable. Opera News would never publish a racist or anti-Semitic letter, but obviously feels that homophobia is perfectly acceptable.

The letter:

"Your story about Wayne Turnage was indeed touching, for anyone in the throes of pain and suffering such as his is worthy of our concern and care. I feel the article was out of place, however, and would have been better suited to a publication issued by the Gay Men's Health Crisis or the like.

"Undue sympathy for a person who has undergone the ravages of a disease brought upon himself by his own disordered actions (unlike victims of cancer and heart disease, who may be

termed innocent in strictly moral terms) is a slap in the face of persons who are trying to live their lives according to nature's laws. And one law of nature is that active homosexuality is a perversion.

"The message has been given to us loud and clear and continues unabated, that our homosexual brethren have got to stop having sex. A healthy dose of self-discipline is needed, particularly if we are to see an end to this horrible disease.

"R.D. Bulos"

Please let Opera News know that antigay comments will not be tolerated by writing to: Opera News, The Metropolitan Opera Guild, Inc., 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023-6593.

Personals

To place a personal ad:

Personals are $15.00 for two months, or fu months for $20.00. The maximum number of words is 40. If you wish to exceed 40 words, each additional word is 20 cents. For example, a 50-word personal for two months costs $17.00; for four months it costs $22.00. Numbers count as one word. Hyphenated words (for example, 50-word and either/or) count as two. When in doubt, count it.

Be positive: describe what you want in a person, not what don't want. A negative ad, such as "no you X or Y" can be a turn-off. The Chronicle will not print sexually explicit ads. The Chronicle reserves the right to edit to conform to our policy and style and if your payment is incorrect.

Personals must be received by the first of the month in order to be included in the next month's issue. Include your forwarding address and a signed statement that you are over 18. Please print legibly your name, address and phone number on the same piece of paper as your personal ad and your signed statement. All ads will be assigned a box number, no direct responses will be allowed.

All names of advertisers and respondents are kept strictly confidential. Ads will not be returned. Send your personal ad copy and payment to the Chronicle, or GPC, P.O. Box 5426, Cleveland, OH 44101. Make checks and money orders payable to the Gay People's Chronicle or GPC.
